My Whereabouts

I check in every now and then, but I have been spending most of my time over on videogamegeek.com (under the same username) and occasionally on Flight Rising.

My little sister just got a pair of Green anoles from her school, apparently it's some science project they do every year and then give the anoles away to people who want them. At first I was told they were 'Chameleons' and spent hours researching thier needs (I've never had reptiles before), only to find out that they were actually anoles!

Now I'm pouring hundreds of dollars into these two guys, but there worth it. But while researching on anole care I came across complaints of carnies/vendors selling anoles as 'baby dragons' often calling themselves an 'Ophanage for Baby Dragons'.

They are selling anoles in small plastic containers with pellet food, sand substrate, a seashell (presumably for the food), and a branch for $15.00 claiming it's everything they need. They provide thier customers with completely inaccurate information: reptilerescueman.freeyellow.co…, repticzone.com/forums/Anoles/m…, www.flickr.com/photos/thebeade…

Anyone else heard of these people?

Save Tony

2 min read
Taken from #ThePredators group blog:

Tony, whom you may have heard of, is a 500 pound Siberian/Bengal tiger mix. He is kept in a small concrete and steel cage at a truck stop, as a roadside attraction. His "enclosure" consists of steel bars, concrete to sleep on, a pathetic wooden structure in the middle and a small metal barrel for water. He breathes fumes from thousands of cars and trucks day and night. As well as having not even a single moment of silence. Signs had to be posted, telling on lookers not to throw things at the tiger.
He turned 10 in July. 10 years of living in conditions worse than a prisoner. And the possibility of another 10.

But Tony is getting a shot at a real home. The permit which allows the man who owns the truck stop to keep Tony is about to be up for renewal. If we can get enough support showing that we don't want this to happen, then Tony may be allowed to go to his forever home at the Big Cat Rescue, an accredited sanctuary in Tampa, Florida that has been fighting along side all of us to give Tony a real life. With trees and grass and ponds and other tigers.

Taken from the petition website:

A 1993 Iberville Parish County Ordinance prohibited the display of wild exotic animals as pets but was never enforced. The ordinance was amended on March 17, 2009 to allow Tony’s owner Michael Sandlin to keep Tony.

Mr. Sandlin then had to secure a license from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. LDWF’s Large Carnivore Manager Maria Davidson stated:

“It is the Department’s position that private possession of tigers poses a significant hazard to public safety and is detrimental to the health of the animal. Prolonged confinement is by its nature stressful to tigers and proper long-term care by experienced persons is essential to the health of the animal.”

On December 14, 2009 the LDW&F granted a permit to allow Tony’s owner to keep him at the truck stop.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF-www.worldwildlife.org/ ) has a petition to save the tiger with a goal of 100,000 signatures. As few as 3,200 tigers remain in the wild and there numbers continue to drop but with plently of protected habitat, game to hunt, and poacher control they can make a come back!

2010 is the year of the tiger but there numbers continue to plumet and they are still killed for thier skin, bones, and flesh because of there beauty and the long held belief that thier bones have medicinal properties (this has been disproven by science) and because without enough room to roam freely and game are forced to hunt on farmers livestock and are persecuted by locals for it.

In the last 100 years the tiger population has dropped by 97% and its habitat has shrunk to only 7% of what it used to be. Three species of tiger have already gone extinct: Bali(1937), Javan(1980's), Caspian(1950's), and the South China tiger is on its way with fewer than 20 indiviuals remaining in the wild.

WWF hopes to double tiger numbers by:

Step up Anti-Poaching: Despite bans there is alot of money to be made off tiger parts on the black market. Snares and other traps set for tigers have started to appear on a regular basis in some areas and by adding more Anti-Poaching patrols they'll be better able to protect tiger habitat.

Work with Communities: Tigers are often forced into areas with people due to shrinking habitat and are shot out of fear and in retaliation of killed livestock. WWF wants to educate locals in thirteen range states, start education programs, and get compensation quickly to those who loose livestock to tigers.

Step up Political Efforts: WWF is driving forward the first Heads of Government Tiger Summit which will be hosted by Prime Minister Putin of Russia and bring together influential leaders of the 13 countries where tigers are still found.

Increase Protected Territory: Human population growth, industry, and climate change are all putting alot of pressure on the tiger. The demand for palm oil, timber, logging, and roads continue to force it into smaller and smaller areas which leads to more conflict with humans and makes it an easier target for poachers. The WWF hopes to secure 300,000 hectares of prime, protected habitat.
